Merkel on Migration Crisis: We Must Stick Together

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that dealing with illegal migration is of great importance for the whole region and stressed that all EU countries should unite their efforts.

"I personally believe that illegal migration is one of the great challenges for the EU," said she during a press conference.

Her statement comes as her party members from the Christian Democratic Union, discuss a new plan for migration that would enable the local authorities to reject migrants who have been registered in other EU countries. However, The Christian Social Union, whose leader is Seehofer, urges migrants without documents or who have already been denied asylum in Germany, to be returned straight from the German border.

The debates on the migration crisis gained force after Italy refused to allow a migrant ship to dock at its port earlier this week.

Moreover, the European Commission has proposed plans to triple the bloc’s border controls budget. The additional funds would be spent on improving border enforcement and management coordination between EU member states.
