Confirmed West Nile Fever Case in Bulgaria

A 55-year-old man from a village near Plovdiv is with a confirmed diagnosis of West Nile fever, Actualno reported. His treatment takes place at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases and, after a severe comatose state, the patient is already improving.

In an interview for the Bulgarian National Television, Prof. Dr. Todor Kantardzhiev, Director of the Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, commented that the first proven case in Bulgaria is in 2015 and the patient was a child. Ten days ago, there was a case with a woman who is already improving, and at the beginning of the month, the diagnosis of the man has also been proven. He also said that West Nile fever is a disease that is common in Bulgaria neighboring countries on the Balkans - Serbia and Greece. The virus is spread by mosquitoes.

Statistics show that in 200 bitten people, only one gets ill, but they develop inflammation of the central brain. Of 100 people with inflammation, 15% may die.
