The Strike of the Greek Seamen Continues

The strike of the Greek seamen continues, the “24-chasa“ newspaper reported.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers on the Aegean and Ionian islands and tens of thousands of tons of goods remain there for the second consecutive day because of the prolonged strike. The strike actions actually began on Sunday and were announced only for Monday, but yesterday the organization decided to continue it for another day until Wednesday morning, BTA reported.

Workers insist on a salary increase of 5%. Yesterday the employers changed the proposed increase to 2%, but it was rejected by the union.

In September an average of 150,000 passengers and 25,000 tons of cargo are transported daily by the ferries. Even if the strike ends tomorrow morning, it will take several days to transport the accumulated cargo, and the people on the islands remain completely trapped.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry advises Bulgarian tourists to seek information from the respective tourist companies as well as from the Coast Guard.
