Krasimir Karakachanov Wears Blue Helmet for Parliamentary Group Meeting

Bulgaria’s Defense Minister and one of the leaders of the United Patriots parliamentary group, Krasimir Karakachanov, went to a coalition meeting wearing an UN-like blue helmet.

The United Patriots is a parliamentary coalition of Bulgarian right-wing parties which is in serious jeopardy of breaking up due to internal disputed between its leaders. Krasimir Karakachanov, leader of VMRO-BNM, has been a vocal supporter of keeping the coalition together. Today, he went to a UP meeting wearing a blue helmet reminiscent of the ones used by United Nations peacekeeping personnel, probably parodying his role as the stabilizing force in the United Patriots.

The main topic of today’s meeting was the effect of the filed letters of resignation by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Valentin Radev, the Minister of Regional Development, Nikolai Nankov, and the Minister of Transport, Ivaylo Moskovski following a tragic bus crash that cost the lives of 17 people. The United Patriots were reportedly unhappy that GERB, the ruling party, didn’t discuss the resignations with them. Only Volen Siderov, the leader of Ataka is said to have been pleased with the resignations.

The main source of tension within the UP is a feud between the leader of the National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria, Valeri Simeonov, and Volen Siderov.
