Macedonian Nationalist Party VMRO-DPMNE May Oust Its Leader

VMRO-DPMNE, the Macedonian nationalist opposition party, is going to have a change of leadership and direction after the name change referendum on September 30.

The Macedonian publication "Sloboden Pecat" reported on the story, citing sources inside VMRO-DPMNE. SP writes that a coalition of reformers inside the party will organize a congress demanding for the resignation of the current leader, Hristijan Mickoski, and choosing his successor. The process will begin after the name change referendum on September 30. According to the reformers, the party is heading towards a political chasm that threatens its relevance.

VMRO-DPMNE is famous for its Macedonialist nationalism, which often put it at odds with the country's neighbors. The party's current leader, Hristijan Mickoski, called the name dispute settlement with Greece “a capitulation.” Macedonia’s deal with Greece will open the doors towards EU and NATO membership. It’s yet unknown in what direction VMRO-DPMNE will head. However, the results of the referendum will certainly play a large role in the future of the party and the country itself.
