Bulgarian Socialist Party Proposes Increase in Heating Welfare

The Bulgarian Socialist Party calls for the increase in the number of families to receive social welfare for heating.

BGNES reported on a BSP's press conference. The party’s leader, Kornelia Ninova, commented that the increase in the prices of natural gas will heavily affect the heating infrastructure of Bulgaria. Ninova state that in July, electricity prices went up by 2% and heating -by 7%. The socialist leader said: “We think that the Bulgarian citizens will take that price shock very hard, as 1.6 million of them live below the poverty line at 321 leva.”

According to present data, 204,635 families receive heating welfare. BSP predicts that the number will rise to 400,000. Ninova stated that: “We use the international and world criteria for what constitutes energy poverty. And that is – if you’re spending more than 10% of your income for energy.” The socialists also demand an increase in the amount of heating welfare from 374 to 403 leva, keeping up with the increase in prices.

Ninova stated: “This will cost the budget 86,188,000 levs. Where will we get this money? If we ran the state, we would give them from the surplus. On August 1, 2018, Boyko Borisov announced that the surplus is 2,23 billion levs. Those aren’t his own personal money, even though he has been spending them as such for years.”

The price of heating is expected to reach up to 9% in Bulgaria.
