Bulgaria to Support Hungary Against Brussels

At a meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Bulgarian government decided to draft a position in defense of Hungary and against the proposal to initiate a criminal proceeding against it under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union. This was reported by Capital.bg.

There is no formal announcement of this decision yet and the explanation is that it is not taken on a regular basis, but at an operational meeting and working towards an official position is ongoing. The position will include that Bulgaria does not support the proposal under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union, which states that there is a real risk in a Member State of seriously violating the underlying principles on which the EU is built.

A message from VMRO came to the media, in which Karakachanov's report was attached, on the basis of which the decision was made. There it is said that it is in Bulgaria's interest to support Hungary by deciding against the procedure under Art.7 of the TEU because we will "protect our traditional friends and partners from the political attacks of ideological opponents and defend the rights of Bulgarians in Hungary who, as Hungarian citizens, may be subject to sanctions against Hungary."

Karakachanov commented that "the purpose of the decision against Hungary is to derive political dividends before the elections to the European Parliament in 2019", and the adoption of such a decision by the Council would create a precedent for blurring the border between the European legal framework and the spheres of State sovereignty of the Member State.

On September 12, European deputies voted by a large majority to trigger the criminal proceedings under Art.7 of the EU Treaty against Hungary - by 448 votes in favor, 197 against and 48 abstentions. Hungary became the second country after Poland in the history of the EU regarding such a procedure. The discussion of the measures against Poland was in December last year.
