AEJ: Journalists' Detention Showed Deficits in the System of the Ministry of Interior

The Association of European Journalists in Bulgaria issued an official statement regarding the case of the detained journalists Dimitar Stoyanov from the Bulgarian site “Bivol” and Attila Biro from the Romanian “Rise Project”. The Association believes that it showed "worrying deficits in the system of the Ministry of Interior".

The opinion of the Association is that "the actions of the law enforcement authorities attempt to restrict media freedom" and add that the Ministry of Interior clearly does not have procedures to follow when it comes to journalists performing their job, because, according to the journalists, they have reported that they will carry out an investigation into the territory, but the police officers, however, detained them.

"Investigative journalism plays an extremely important role in imposing the rule of law in a democratic society, and law enforcement authorities should give full support to journalists," is said in the statement. In addition, the Association commented that the concerns about the attempts to restrict the freedom of the press went beyond the territory of Bulgaria and reached "New York Times" and "Washington Post".
