Bulgarian Milk Businesses Suggest Vegetable Oil Ban

Bulgarian businesses suggest a law in which the inclusion of vegetable oil in milk products will be banned.

Dir.bg reports on the proposition. They state that part of Bulgarian business owners claim 60% of Bulgaria’s milk products like cheese contain palm oil. That is both bad for milk producers in the country and for the overall health of the consumer. Products containing vegetable oil will have to be manufactured outside of dairies and be branded in a different way that doesn’t describe them as milk products.

Since milk is costlier than vegetable oils, the price of milk products like cheese will increase to its actual level. 8 kg of milk is needed for 1 kg of cheese. 12 kg is needed for a kilogram of kashkaval, Bulgarian yellow cheese. If the new restrictions are implemented, that will increase the average prices of these products to BGN 10 and 15 respectively.
