Protests in Varna, Bulgaria After the Death of a Cyclist

Citizens of Varna protested the road conditions of the city after a cyclist was killed by a driver without a license and several previous violations.

The cyclist was the 39-year-old Martin Chikalov, a ballet dancer. The driver literally plowed through the cyclist. A woman who was driving right behind the killer’s car described the incident: “I couldn’t believe that this man drove over as if he was driving over an object, that’s what I thought at first, he continued and didn’t stop”. The driver was 25 and never had a license. Despite that, he had two previous driving violations. He surrendered the next day after the police spent the night searching for him.

The protest was named “A Walk for Life.” It included many cyclists as well as the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased Martin Chikalov. The protesters demanded the implementation of safety measures at unsafe junctions of Varna’s roads as well as more police patrols.
