Borisov Responds to Zaev's Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising Comments

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov answered the recent comments of Macedonia’s PM Zoran Zaev, who stated that the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising was a purely Macedonian. Borisov stated that he’ll take those words into account when Bulgaria’s time to vote for Macedonia entering the EU comes.

Borisov said: “Everyone measures their own words and that’s on their account. When he [Zaev] said such a thing, even if he said it without thinking, it’s on his account as well, because, when it comes to the EU, and we must also give our agreement, we’ll remind on these things. That’s why we advise that everyone remain more reserved. We were together on Thursday, we celebrated together, why are you bringing us back to this topic?”

Borisov’s comments come after several attacks and accusations that he’s ignoring Bulgaria’s national interests when it comes to Macedonia. Members of the opposition party BSP, including his leader Kornelia Ninova, who called Borisov’s lack of reaction “a silent agreement” with Zaev’s statements.
