VMRO-DPMNE: Macedonians Want EU and NATO Membership, but No Name Change

The General Secretary of the FYROM party VMRO-DPMNE, Igor Janusev, gave a press release speech in which he claimed Macedonians are in support of NATO and EU membership but reject a change of their country’s name.

VMRO-DPMNE’s official site gave the press release. It quotes Janusev: “The wide robbery that is being carried out by the criminal authorities, led by Zoran Zaev, is being covered up with new divisions among the citizens. Crime and excess aren’t in accordance with European standards.”

Janushev continued: “Mr. Zaev, the bigger part of the citizens are for joining the EU and NATO, but categorically against the agreement for capitulation that you signed with our Southern neighbor.”

Janushev is referencing the name change agreement between Greece and Macedonia, in which the Zaev government agreed to change their country’s name to North Macedonia. The agreement will solve one of the biggest problems Macedonia had towards joining the EU. The deal with Greece was met with criticism by the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE government, who are in complete opposition to any name change. Macedonia will conduct a referendum in September concerning the agreement.
