Bulgarian National Audit Office: Control Over Organic Food and Products is Not Effective Enough

After conducting an audit for the period from January 1, 2015, until June 30, 2017, the Bulgarian National Audit Office concluded that the System of Surveillance and Control of Organic Food Production and Trade does not sufficiently protect the interests of the consumers.

The reasons for inadequate control include the lack of information for all the sites in the country that trade organic products and foods. In addition, there is no control by the Bulgarian Food and Safety Agency in catering establishments and online commerce due to lack of a regulation.

It is also noted that the process of issuing authorization for control activity is not sufficiently effective as the vast majority of the audited period is carried out without validated internal rules and there are cases in which candidates do not meet important requirements.

The Office noted that consumers are not sufficiently aware of the labeling requirements of the organic food and the ways of recognizing them.
