The Bulgarian Medical Union: The Unsuccessful Intubation is Not a Mistake

The Bulgarian Medical Union denies the failed intubation that led to the death of a woman with a planned C-section in Pleven to be a medical mistake. This was stated in an interview for bTV by the General Secretary of the Union, Dr. Stoyan Borisov, stressing that the unsuccessful intubation "is not a mistake, but a skip".

Yesterday, the Health Ministry disseminated the findings of the case investigation that found a disorder in the diagnostic process - that in the preoperative anesthesiological consultation, the patient was not examined to assess whether the oral cavity condition allowed an endotracheal intubation. This later turns out to be fatal for the woman.

Experts anesthesiologists will pronounce on this case. "Everyone needs to know that when he goes to a doctor, he goes with his physiological and anatomical features," Dr. Borisov said, pointing out that even if the consultation had been made, this would not guarantee that intubation would be successful.

He said the court would decide whether there was a medical mistake, and the case would be considered by the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Anesthesiology Board.
