New "Citizen Education" Subject Introduced in the Bulgarian Schools

The Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Culture announced the new education plans for 11 and 12 grade.

They will be brought into effect during the 2020-2021 school year. The inclusion of a new subject called “Citizen Education” is notable. It will aim to teach students about practical matters relating to democratic administration, law, and to help students understand the structures and political issues around them.

The literature plan will be changed to include new works. The teachers demanded more works of modern Bulgarian literature. The poem “Dedication” by Petya Dubarova will be included in the 12th-grade plan. 11th graders will study “Bai Ganyo, a Journalist” by Aleko Konstantinov. Teachers will have the option to include “Bay Ganyo Makes Elections.” “Balkan syndrome” by Stanislav Stratiev, “Noah’s Ark” by Yordan Radichkov, and “The Peach Thief” by Emilian Stanev are also among the newly introduced works.
