42% of the Bulgarian Fifth-Grade Students Know Nothing About Africa

A total of 42% of the fifth-graders in Bulgaria have learned nothing about the continent of Africa, which together with Antarctica entered as a new component of the Geography program last school year. The average achievement of the pupils in the examination after 5th grade was 15.6 points from the maximum score of 25.

5761 students have been involved in external geography assessment. In the exam, there were 25 questions, of which 7 had to be answered in writing. A successful test is considered one in which the student has answered correctly of at least 50% of the questions.

The average number of points (12.5) is reached by 71% of the students. They had difficulties in explaining the factors and elements of the African climate, as well as in grouping the countries according to their geographic location, the Ministry of Education and Science stated.

The themes Africa and Antarctica were added to the material for the Earth as a planet, nature, society, and economy on a regional and global level.
