First Half of 2018: 6% More Revenues Due to Cigarettes in Bulgaria

For the first six months of 2018, the National Customs Agency collected revenues amounting to BGN 4,595.9 billion from excise duties, VAT on imports, customs duties and fines. The amount collected was 5.8% more than the revenues for the same period for 2017.

Revenues from excise duty on tobacco products outpaced those of fuels. BGN 103.4 million from the increase in the tobacco product group is formed by the revenues from cigarettes. Significant growth of almost 50% shows the tobacco excise tax revenues, as it is due to the heated tobacco products taxed at the rate of cut tobacco. Lost revenues in the budget amounting to BGN 14.8 million are due to the growing consumption of alternative tobacco products for smoking.

Revenues from excise duty on fuel also rose with 1.7% compared to the first half of 2017. For the first time, the VAT revenue on import crossed the border of BGN 2 billion for the first half of the year, and also for the first time exceeded the limit of 100 million earnings for the same period.
