1000 Dams in Bulgaria Need Serious Repair

"1000 dams in Bulgaria need serious repair," said Deputy Director of the State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance Kiril Voynov.

The reason for this comment is the increasing rainfall in the country and consequently floods over the past week. Voynov stressed that besides Bulgaria, both Greece and Romania have suffered, which should lead us to think about how to be more responsible.

The Deputy Director announced that they are launching a campaign to release water volumes in dams that have risen in the last week, with the main problem being cascade dams, which are 291 in Bulgaria. They are under a permanent oversight because of the danger of overflow.

"The state has taken some of the local authority's role in overseeing dams," he stressed, adding that this was done to avoid tragedies with people living around water basins.
