An Increase for the Excise Duty on Smokeless Cigarettes and Draft Beer

Members of the Parliament adopted at first reading amendments to the Excise Duties and Tax Warehouses Act - raising the excise duties on smokeless cigarettes and draft beer. The bill was adopted with 101 votes "in favor" and 63 "against".

The first draft law provided for smokeless cigarettes to be subject to an excise duty equal to that of the cigarettes. Consequently, the majority in parliament agreed that the rate should not increase so much, reaching a consensus that the excise duty to be 40% of the excise of the other cigarettes.

The reason for the increase is that it will bring new funds into the budget. Currently, the excise tax for the electronic cigarette case is BGN 0.93, and with an increase of 40%, it will become BGN 1.43.

The price of draft beer will also rise as the project envisages beer bottles of over 5 liters to be marketed with a banderole.
