18 Middle-Eastern Immigrants Sentenced in Bulgaria For Attempting to Cross into Romania

18 illegal immigrants were sentenced in Bulgaria for trying to cross the border with Romania in Ruse.

24chasa reported that the Regional Persecutor’s Office in Ruse announced the sentences. The 18 immigrants hailed from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. They were captured while trying to leave Bulgaria through the Danube bridge checkpoint. Three of the migrant traffickers involved in the operation also reportedly face trial.

All sentenced immigrants pleaded guilty and cooperated with the authorities by making deals. The punishments are imprisonment, suspended sentences, and paying fines. In general, Bulgaria is not an attractive country for the migrants to stay and its often used as a transit zone to the wider European Union. The 18 sentenced Middle-Easterners had the same idea – to leave the country and go to Romania, and probably move further into the European Union.
