Bulgaria and Greece Begin the Construction of the Gas Connection

Bulgaria and Greece еnter with an equal 50% stake in the just-signed agreement to begin the construction of the gas pipeline between the two countries.

It will connect the national gas network of "Bulgartransgaz" with the gas transmission network of Greece. The project has been declared by the European Commission to be of a common interest to the EU and the whole region of Central and Southeast Europe.

The implementation of the project was delayed due to two complaints filed to the Commission for Protection of Competition. The first one was against the public procurement of engineering consultant and the second one - against the pipe supplier's contract.

The connection is 140 km in length on Bulgarian territory. 3 billion cubic meters of gas per year is the first capacity, with a maximum of 5.5 billion - at a later stage. Its construction must start this year and it is expected to start working by 2020.

Security of supply, competitive prices, and competitive economies - with these words the project was described by Energy Minister - Temenuzhka Petkova. Greek Minister Giorgos Stathakis said that this is a great project that benefits both Bulgaria and Greece.
