Zaharieva: The EU to Not Lose Focus on the Western Balkans

"We have managed to give clear perspectives and clear time limits to two countries - the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Albania. This is a success for the whole European Union, not only for the Bulgarian Presidency," said Deputy Prime Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva at an external meeting of the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists.

She added that the focus on the Western Balkans over the last six months has prompted leaders in these countries to start solving major problems as well as meeting the conditions needed to start membership talks.

Zaharieva:"Over 60 meetings and consultations with the Western Balkan countries and European partners have been organized during the Bulgarian Presidency." Several future Presidencies are expected to continue working on the priorities set by the Bulgarian Presidency, she added.

The Deputy Prime Minister commented that at the end of the country's Presidency we were able to build a clear plan and strategy for the financing sources of the Western Balkan countries. Some of the successes achieved over these six months include the Friendship, Neighborhood, and Cooperation Treaty with the Republic of Macedonia and the agreement reached between Skopje and Athens on the name, but she noted that there is a lot of work.
