Officialization of the Sign Language in Bulgaria

12 organizations of individuals with hearing difficulties want to officialize the Sign language in the Constitution.

This is what Mitko Yakimov, chairman of Foundation "Deaf Unlimited", said. Two products have been already prepared by them - a glossary of the Bulgarian gesture language and a scientific description of its grammar.

The organizations have already submitted to the National Assembly their desire for an officialization.

This happens thanks to the proving of its existence as a language of communication. "We, the deaf, express our thoughts through gestures in the virtual space and we can understand everything," said Yakimov, emphasizing that their primary goal is to teach children with impaired vision and hearing in gestural language. They also proposed for it to be studied in the ordinary schools if the students have interest.

The purpose of creating the glossary of the Bulgarian gesture language is to establish a standard for the unification of all gestures in Bulgaria. 500 pieces of the dictionary have already been printed, but they are insufficient, as the deaf in the country exceeds this number.
