Netanyahu: Bulgaria to Open Consulate in Jerusalem

Bulgaria will create an honorary consulate in the city of Jerusalem, according to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that he talked with his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov over the phone and discussed the details around the establishment of an honorary Bulgarian consulate in Jerusalem.

This diplomatic mission aims to service Bulgarians all over Israel. Netanyahu is quoted as saying: “I really hope that this will lead to the opening of an official Bulgarian embassy in Jerusalem."

It certainly seems like this is a step in the direction of Bulgaria focusing more on Jerusalem as the capital of Israel rather than Tel Aviv.

Earlier this year, the United States moved their embassy into Jerusalem in the building that previously served as the US consulate. Bulgaria’s PM Boyko Borisov visited Israel last month and met with Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

Bulgaria's northern neighbour Romania also made steps towards moving their country's embassy in the Holy City.
