42% of 15-year-old Bulgarians - Functionally Illiterate

PISA dates are showing that 42% of 15-year-old Bulgarians are functionally illiterate in language and mathematics.

"Education is the key to economic inequalities." This was stated by Arup Banerji, Director of the World Bank for the European Union, Europe, and Central Asia, during the Plovdiv Economic Forum. He added, that in the developed countries the functional illiteracy is at times lower than in the underdeveloped.

The overall statistics from 2015 show that in Reading, Mathematics, and Science, Bulgarians rates are lower than the average. Only in the field of Mathematics, an improvement is made since 2006, as the rest two rates had stayed stable for more than 10 years ago.

The European Union over the past 30 years has been the world's largest economy, he said. For Bulgaria, the economic growth is about the EU average. People among the poorest groups do not actually benefit from economic growth, Banerji said. In his opinion, the countries of southern Europe are developing slowlier than their neighbours.
