Less Refugees Seeking Protection in Bulgaria

Three times less is the number of the refugees seeking protection in the first five months of this year in Bulgaria, compared to the second half of 2017, show Eurostat data on the EU migration flow.

For the first five months of 2018, a total of 492 refugees have claimed protection for the first time in Bulgaria, while for the second half of 2017 their number was 1 595 or three times more than at the beginning of this year. According to the data of the State Agency for Refugees, from the total of 492 persons seeking protection in the country, 152 were granted with a refugee status, 250 were granted with a humanitarian status and the others received a refugee status refusal.

The largest was the group of migrants from Syria - 208 applications, followed by Afghanistan - 76 applications, Iraq - 66 applications, Pakistan - 17 applications, etc. In 2015, more than 20 000 people sought protection in Bulgaria, in 2016 - 19 400, and in 2017 - 3 700. Since the beginning of the year, the largest number of candidates has been registered in Germany – 34 400 candidates. The next countries are France – 25 300 candidates, Italy – 17 800 and Greece – 13 000 candidates.

According to Eurostat, there are currently around 900 000 applications of migrants, waiting for asylum decisions, with the largest number being in Germany - about 420 000, Italy – 150 000, and Austria - over 50 000.
