Bulgaria to Get More EU Funding for 2020-2026

Bulgaria will receive a larger amount of EU subsidies during the 2020-2026 period according to the Bulgarian deputy minister of regional development Denitsa Nikolova.

While she states the budget remains to be confirmed, Nikolova claims the initial estimates put the sum Bulgaria is expected to receive at €1 billion.

Nikolova also revealed that in the next program period, Bulgaria will focus on connectivity within the region and partnership with its neighbours.

A new focus will be put on overall regional projects rather than putting money in the hands of smaller, municipality-level projects. The specific characteristics, demographics, and resources of given area will also be put at greater importance. Currently, Bulgaria’s North-Western region is much less developed than the other parts of the country.

Currently, Bulgaria is planning on resurrecting the Belene NPP project in partnership with other Balkan states.

That would develop the country’s capacity for electricity exporting and may help Macedonia and Serbia in improving relations with Bulgaria, and thus the European Union.
