Bulgarian President: Bulgaria and Austria Need to Deepen Their Relationship

The President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, visited Bulgaria. He was received by the Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. During the ceremony, Radev said: “This is our third meeting for the last 7 months, which is proof of the increasing interest and will of our two countries – Bulgaria and Austria, to deepen and develop their relationship, based on friendship and mutual trust.”

Radev stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, especially in business and security. The Bulgarian President said this about the meeting: “We talked about the challenges of the migrant crisis, the need of reform of the European system for shelters, the perspective of the cohesive policy after 2020, the Danube strategy and the perspective for the states of the Danube region. We were united in the fact that this strategy needs its own rebirth, as it's not only important for the countries in the region, but for Bulgaria as well, as the most underdeveloped regions are here. And it's our national priority to seek mechanisms for their development.”

The President of Austria said that the relationship with Bulgaria is important because Austria is going to take the EU Presidency once Bulgaria’s term is up. He said: “For example, concerning the strategy related to the Western Balkans. I strongly hope that the meeting at the top in Sofia in May will truly bring progress.” Austria’s President also voiced support for Bulgaria entering Schengen and said that Austrian investment in Bulgaria is an important topic.
