Former Macedonian Prime Minister Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison

Nikola Gruevski, the former Prime Minister of Macedonia, was sentenced to 2 years in prison. The so-called "Tank" trial against Gruevski was based on allegations that he had acted as an instigator of a criminal act.

According to both the court and the prosecution, Gruevski is guilty of illegally ordering a luxurious "Mercedes". During today's hearing in court, Gruesvski was absent. The "Mercedes" allegedly costed around €600,000 and Gruevski's crime led to huge scandals during the political crisis in Macedonia.

The Gruevski era of Macedonian politics was marked with nationalism and oftentimes controversial decisions. One government program was"Skopje 2014" which aimed at improving the historical appeal of Macedonia's capital, but was criticized for its costs and historical revisionism. Some monuments and statues built in the project were removed, one of which was the monument to Andon Kyoseto, a Bulgarian revolutionary.
