Bulgaria Proposes Belene NPP, Gives no Guarantees

The Bulgarian government approved an official proposition to start looking into the possibility of resurrecting the Belene Nuclear Power Plant project with private investments.

The proposition started in March 2018. In it, the facts surrounding the project are discussed, mainly the usage of the leftover equipment since the freezing of the project in 2011.

“Belene” will be constructed if the state manages to secure the right equipment and the strategic investment in the project.

Macedonia has expressed interest in being part of the resurrected nuclear power plant project. The new proposition, however, does not guarantee that the project will go forward, as of now they are just looking at the possibilities.

A Rosatom executive expressed his company’s readiness to provide assistance in the construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant. A new Bulgarian nuclear power plant would surely have a massive effect on the country's energy industry.
