Bulgarian Politicians Think The Count of Monte Cristo Was Real

The chairman of the Law Commission Danail Kirilov made the following remark in front of the National Assembly: “Cases of escape from prison have always happened, as we start from the time of the Count of Monte Cristo and reach the strictly guarded “Alcatraz.”

A Bulgarian politician made the news for a rather silly comparison of the recent escape from Sofia prison to the prison breaks of the Count of Monte Cristo and Alcatraz as if Alexandre Dumas’s classic literary work is just as real as yesterday’s bold prison break or the mysterious escape from Alcatraz in 1962.

The situation is made all the more hilarious by the fact Tsvetan Tsvetanov, the chairman of the parliamentary group of the ruling party GERB, approved of the remark, saying: “I think that the historical vision made by the college Kirilov shows that there were such cases in other countries.”

The two prisoners haven’t been found. The Minister of Justice, Tsetsa Tsacheva, promised that if the Prime Minister demanded her resignation due to the prison escape, she’d file it immediately.
