Modernization of the Sofia-Elin Pelin Railway Line Was Launched

The Ministry of Transport announced that the modernization of the Sofia-Elin Pelin railway section will start next Tuesday at Kazichene Station.

The official start of the project will be given by Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications Velik Zanchev and General Director of the "National Railway Infrastructure Company" Krassimir Papukiyski.

The modernization of the Sofia-Elin Pelin railway line will cost a total of EUR 68 million, of which EUR 58 million (85%) are provided by the Connecting Europe Facility.

The project includes the modernization of the 23-kilometre railway line, the signalling and telecommunication systems and the contact network, as well as the construction of new overpasses at Verilha and Kazichene railway stations for the safe crossing at two levels with the existing road network.

Bulgaria has around 4,000km of track, however considerable chunks of it are out of date and need improvements to electrify the rail, or develop high-speed lines. Many such programs are being financed by the EU across Eastern Europe, although progress tends to be slow.

Railway tends to be one of the most efficient methods of transport for inland travel when waterways are unavailable.
