The Bulgarian Government May Withdraw the Istanbul Convention

During its meeting today, the Bulgarian government will most probably discuss the proposal of canceling the Istanbul Convention. It is expected that the Council of Ministers is going to withdraw the document from the National Assembly, where the it has been filed for ratification.

The Convention created a scandal in the Bulgarian society, mainly because of "controversial contents" concerning the term gender. Many conservative politicians and activists campaigned against the document, claiming it aims to undermine traditional family values, deeply embedded in our society.

By the time he visited the European Parliament, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov promised to his European colleagues that he would do everything in his power to ratify the convention. However, it was not long after that the debates on the subject were postponed indefinitely. Now, the government is considering absolutely withdrawing the government - naturally, a majority of people are going to celebrate this decision but a small group of activists who even protested in front of the Parliament are sure to react in a negative fashion. One thing is certain - we will be following the development of the story.
