New Phone Scam in Bulgaria

The newest scheme to "relieve" people of their money exploits one of the most human traits of all - hope. The police report that old people are now giving all of their finances not only after a phone call but are also willing to give them in person to the scammers - in hopes of getting their pensions raised.

An officer from the police precinct in Pleven explains that the criminals pick their victims on a random principle - they weigh in the possibility of success and by using eloquence and a decent look, they manage to even enter the victim's home. Here is their MO - the scammers pose as social workers who will lobby for the pension of the victim to get raised but, of course, they require an initial payment.

Phone scams are not new to Bulgarians. While some people have lost as much as €50,000 to phone bribery and threats, the police are trying to push forward creative information campaigns to draw old people's attention to the problem and help prevent people falling prey to such awful deeds.
