The EC Wants EU Member States to Ratify the Istanbul Convention

The European Commission wants the EU member states that have yet to ratify the so-called Istanbul Convention to do it as soon as possible. Those were the words of the Vice-President of the European Commission Andrus Ansip during a debate in the European Parliament.

Ansip is aware that many people were brought to believe that the Convention will somehow force their countries to legalize gay marriage. He stresses that such misinterpretation is false and is beside the point of the document. The only goal of the Convention is to fight violence against women. The VP of the European Commission expressed concerns that a false translation and interpretation of the term "gender" has sparked debates in a very wrong direction. While 17 countries have already ratified the document, the Bulgarian government withdrew the Convention from the chamber of the Bulgarian parliament.
