2 Year Suspended Sentence for Infanticide in Bulgaria

A woman from the Bulgarian village Stalevo was keeping her pregnancy a secret and after giving birth, left her child to die on a pile of rocks.

Small Bulgarian village by the name of Stalevo, located in the region of Haskovo has been troubled by rumors of infanticide. The village mayor contacted the police about these rumors and an investigation was opened. It did not take long for the police to follow the rumors and locate the woman. Once questioned about her involvement, she admitted to everything and shared her story in deep detail.

According to what she told the police, the woman got pregnant in 2015. When friends questioned her about her growing belly, she told them that she was gaining weight. On the night of January 1, 2016, she gave birth to a baby girl. The whole birthing procedure took place in her home and she was not assisted during the process. She tore the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in rags and left it outside on a pile of rocks. On the next morning, the baby had died of hypothermia. The woman, who is a mother of two more children picked the baby’s corpse, placed it in a coal sack and stashed it.

Fast-forward to 2018 when the woman received an effective sentence of 2 years in jail. Apparently not satisfied with the result, the woman appealed her sentence and it has been lowered to a two year suspended sentence with five years of probation. The sentence is now final and cannot be appealed or protested.
