Anti-Corruption Unit Strikes in Pernik, Bulgaria

After a successful campaign in the municipality of Septemvri, the Anti-Corruption Unit - part of the Specialized Prosecution in Bulgaria - has exposed yet another scheme - this time in Pernik.

Apparently, the municipality of Pernik has paid over 1.2 million BGN (€600,000) to two companies that provided the landfill and waste disposal services for the period between 2012 and 2017. The money has been given for services that haven't been provided - both firms belong to the same person. Two officials have already been apprehended - the former mayor of Pernik - Ivan Ivanov and another mayor - yet unnamed. They have been apprehended for 24 hours - it is yet unknown whether charges are going to be pressed or not. The investigation goes on - addresses are being checked, documentation is being confiscated from the municipality.
