Bulgaria Is in the Top 5 EU Countries by Murder Rate

Bulgaria takes a shameful place in a rather bothersome statistic. There are only three EU countries who have a higher number of premeditated murders. The countries are Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The countries with the least murders are Austria, Spain, and the Netherlands.

According to the National Statistical Institute in Bulgaria, there have been 79 murders and 26 attempted murders in 2016. For the same time period, 97 murder convictions have been issued - some relating to older cases. Throughout 2016 there have been 820 bodily harm crimes.

However, the NSI is optimistic for the future. For the last five years (2012-2017) the number of criminals per capita has gone down. In 2012 600 out of 100,000 people had a criminal record. In 2017 that number went down by 150. Most of the crimes are done by people in the age group 18-24.
