Bulgarian Weed-Activists March on May 19th

Many young people, patients with acute pains, and activists are going to march against the outdated laws on marijuana in Bulgaria. The march is supposed to happen on May 19th and will be called "Freedom for Cannabis". The main organizers are the activists from Liberty420 (a project of the Bulgarian Libertarian Society) who are aiming to make the event into the biggest demonstration in support of the plant in Bulgaria.

Currently, the penalty for possession is 1 to 3 years in prison. The libertarians are trying to make the government and the MPs think about changing the penalty to confiscation of the product or a fine. Another argument is that Bulgaria's laws on marijuana were written back in the 90s and it meantime have been proven to be ineffective on a worldwide scale. Another argument is that ever since these policies were introduced the number of people smoking "pot" has risen from 300,000 to 1 million.

The organizers remind that a great majority of marijuana users are in the working age which further supports the argument that prison is too heavy a penalty. "The government is doing itself a disservice," they claim. It is a fact that if we keep putting people in prison we won't give them the incentive to get better but instead - we'd be ruining their chances of becoming successful people. Another claim they make is that the Ministry of Interior is trying to artificially inflate the statistic on people arrested for possession just so they can justify budget changes and the alleged "need" for more personnel.

The protest is going to happen in front of the buildings of the three ministries that work together on marijuana laws - the Ministry of Healthcare, the Ministry of Law, and the Ministry of Interior.
