Over 15,000 Bulgarian Kids are Being Homeschooled
Heidelberg, Germany -
Statistics of the Ministry of Education show that over 15 thousand students are being homeschooled this year (2017/18). Currently, there are 717,000 students in Bulgaria (grades 1 to 12), which means that about 2% of all of them are opting for homeschool. In the period 2016/17, there were 20,000 homeschooled children or about 3%.
Up until 2016, the Education Act allowed homeschool only for talented and ill children. However, new changes to the Act have made it possible for virtually any student willing to study from home. Students or their parents just have to file in a request and get approved by a local committee on education.
One of the main critiques against these changes was that there still isn't an established criterion that determines whether or not the environment at home is adequate for homeschooling. Proponents of the change, however, promised that details surrounding the learning environment and guaranteeing progress and quality homeschooling will be discussed later on.
