Juncker Does Not See the Countries of the Western Balkans in the EU before 2025

The Western Balkan countries must progress even before they join the EU. This was stated by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, BTA reported. Juncker told the Austrian Parliament he does not see the countries of the Western Balkans in the EU before 2025.

He added that, in his view, Brexit without an agreement would be "ruinous" to both the EU and the United Kingdom. He expressed hope that a final agreement with the UK would be reached in November.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva said at the opening of an Interparliamentary conference that "the Balkans are at the heart of Europe, a region with a young, highly motivated, and talented population. These young people, these citizens deserve our support," NOVA reported.

Zaharieva commented that without the Western Balkans when they are ready to become part of the EU, the European project would not be fully completed. Zaharieva noted that there are still challenges in the Balkans that need to be overcome, open questions among some of the neighbors, as well as the need for many reforms.
