Macedonia to Vote for Constitutional Changes Due to the Name Change Agreement

Macedonian parliament must vote on constitutional amendments allowing the change of the name, bTV announced. Although the referendum failed, it was only consultative, and in order to approve the changes in the Macedonian-Greek agreement, support would be needed by two-thirds or 81 out of 120 Members in Parliament. If this happens, the whole procedure for changing the name of the country to North Macedonia should take about 3 months.

Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said that if VMRO-DPMNE boycotts constitutional changes to change the name of Macedonia, it would lead to early parliamentary elections.

The government has proposed four constitutional amendments. In the texts for constitutional changes, which the government approved and announced on 8 October, it was written: In the entire text of the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia, to add the adjective "North"; changes in the Preamble to the Constitution with the renaming of concrete documents of ASNOM in order to bring them into line with the treaty with Greece; a firmer guarantee for the durability of borders and the fact that the Republic of Macedonia has no territorial claims and care for Macedonians and diasporas abroad, which will mean that the country will take care of the cultural, economic and social rights of its citizens abroad without interfering in the sovereign rights of other states and their home affairs.

Meanwhile, the Greek Prime Minister stressed that if the name of the Republic of Macedonia is not replaced by the agreed one - Republic of North Macedonia, in the neighboring country's constitution, Greece will not allow its membership in international organizations under its old name, reported.
