142 are the victims of rapes in Bulgaria for 2017 according to a report of the Ministry of Interior, "24 hours" reported. Only 71, or 50% of the cases were revealed. It is not clear what the real number of victims is, as not all cases are reported to the police. For severe rape, the punishment in Bulgaria is 10 to 20 years in prison.

The cases of rapes in Bulgaria have increased over the past 3 years - in 2015, 118 were registered, and in 2016 - 127. In 2017, 233 cases have registered as fornications - sexual satisfaction without penetration, violent oral or anal sex, which the law does not treat as rape. 103 are the cases of copulating with minors, some of whom are children or relatives of the abusers. 99% of the sexual abusers are men. Although rarely, women also can be abusers - both over their own gender and over the opposite sex.

The topic became relevant after the rape and murder of Victoria Marinova in Ruse. According to the investigation, the sexual assault on her is the main point of the tragedy that shocked the country, Europe and the world, initiated petitions and criticism towards Bulgaria.
