Bulgaria Last in the Number of Organ Donors

Bulgaria is last in the number of donors per million people. The leading transplant surgeons Prof. Nikola Vladov, and Assoc. Prof. Ivelin Takorov, in an interview for BNT, commented that the reason is not the lack of willingness of the society to proceed to donation but a purely organizational problem of the health system.

Prof. Vladov commented that there are wonderful transplant teams in Bulgaria and the results are absolutely comparable to those from countries around the world, but when a system is left to work without control, it easily stops functioning efficiently.

Assoc. Prof. Ivelin Takorov added that donors now come from only several transplant centers in the country, and Prof. Vladov underlined that a meeting with the new Director of the Executive Transplant Agency has not yet been organized.

Since 2005, 2,796 are the people in Bulgaria, who agreed that after their death their organs can be donated. The most are the people who need a kidney transplant - more than 1,000.
