Mastercard: Sofia is Second in Europe by Growth of Foreign Visitors in 2017

Sofia is ranked second in Europe by a growth of foreign visitors in 2017. This is the result of Mastercard's Global Destination Cities Index. The city that has the highest growth in visits to Europe is Istanbul - 16.8% on an annual basis.

In 2017, Sofia ranked second in Europe by 15.2% growth of foreign visitors. Other cities with more than 12% increase are Lisbon (14.6%), Paris (13.1%), Munich (12.9%), and Warsaw (12.3%).

As for foreign tourists staying in Sofia for the period 2009-2017, Sofia ranks fifth in Europe with an average annual growth of 9%. Before the Bulgarian capital are cities like Bucharest, Lisbon, Minsk, and Santa Cruz de la Palma. The world's most visited destinations are Bangkok, London, and Paris.

For 2017, the money spent by tourists in Sofia reached $204 million compared to $167 million a year earlier.

2017, according to the rating of the local hoteliers, is among the best years for the city-tourism of Sofia because of the increased number of business trips. Sofia Airport data show that in 2017 there is a growth of over 30% on an annual basis of traveling people.
