Serbian President: Europe Should Respect Small Countries

Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić commented on the recent referendum results in Macedonia, saying that Europe should respect the wishes of smaller countries.

Radio Free Europe Macedonia reports on Vučić’s statement. The Serb President was quoted as saying: “It’s not my business to meddle in the internal affairs of another country. I fear and it seems that some people in the world are underestimating us, the Balkan people and think: “let’s see if we can do it with the people, if not, then we do it without the people. We’ll try it with pressuring members of parliament, and if that doesn’t work, then it just has to happen.” The name change referendum in Macedonia failed due to low voter turnout.

Vučić said that while he respects the deal between Greece and Macedonia for a name change, Europe should also respect the desires of smaller countries like Macedonia. The president said: “Europe must act responsibly.”
