Boom of Marriages among minors in Bulgaria

A boom of marriages among minors in Bulgaria has been recorded, as in 2016, 621 couples under the age of 18 have gotten married.

In Bulgaria, those who have 16 years of age can get married, as long as they get special permission from court, which includes an interview with the couple and a definite permission by their parents. If all goes well, the young couple can enter a civil union. During 2016, 1242 people under the age of 18 have entered a civil union, which is a 30% rise compared to 2015. This may be the answer to the problem of rapid population decline in the country, which has been estimated at 23% in 2050.

On the other hand, the number of pensioners who have decided to enter a civil union is falling down. In 2016, 289 elderly couples have decided to get married. The main motivation behind this holds its roots in the socialistic regime, when during the 80’s couples would divorce (on paper) in order to retain their housing, as back then, families were allowed to own only one apartment. Now, these couples are getting re-married, in order to gain widow/er bonus to their pension in later, unfortunate, times.
