1000 Emergency Room Cases in Pirogov for the First Day of 2018

1000 people were processed through Sofia’s biggest ER department during the first night of 2018.

New Year In Bulgaria

It should be noted that Bulgarians are particularly fond of throwing fireworks around Christmas season and New Year. Most of the emergency cases during that time were caused by that habit. Children and people with comparable mental capabilities often endanger their health and the well-being of those around them by carelessly throwing pyrotechnics, expecting an amusing big noise and/or lights.

The loudest and flashiest fireworks (sometimes bought from a grey-market or made at home) can cause loss of fingers, sights, and sound. The Pirogov Hospital, the largest emergency medical institution in Bulgaria, reported that worst cases around New Years tended to be caused by pyrotechnics. Still, with 1000 cases, this year was better than the last.

The authorities have managed to put a curb on the worst grey-market fireworks, which probably contributed to the decrease. The director of Pirogov, Dr. Asen Beltov had this to say: “In comparison to the last holiday season, the situation was calmer, but the number of those that stayed for treatment was larger.”
