Bulgarian Man Beats up Wife. Kills Her in the Process.

After a drunk scandal and a fight, a 61-year-old man from Haskovo killed the woman he lived with. The man called 112 (the emergency line) at 10:30 yesterday and claimed that his partner had died. By arriving at the location of the murder police officers noticed the bruises on the woman's body right away. The autopsy showed that the woman did, in fact, die from her injuries - her skull had been broken during the fight. The man has been previously prosecuted for criminal acts before.

One can easily use this murder to pivot to a much larger subject, that has been pretty important throughout the last week in Bulgarian media and society. Namely - the so-called Istanbul convention. It is a convention meant to protect women's rights and to act against domestic violence. There have been some issues with the convention - many people believe to be much broader than it should be - some find it redefines marriage, gender, and social roles. The government may decide to completely ratify it or ratify it with some reservations. Either way - domestic violence is a real issue and all tools of democracy should be used to fight it.
