In vitro procedures in Bulgaria: the government changes it's promises.

During and after their campaign the governing party GERB seemed determined to keep their promise of an unlimited access to in vitro procedures for families with reproductive problems. The latest statement by the Ministry of Healthcare, however, explains that the in vitro quota per family will only slightly change. The current quota is 3 free procedures per family. The new changes to the Healthcare Act foresee only 4 free procedures.

In the official statement on the matter it's explained that 4 is the optimal amount of tries that result in a pregnancy. Even at the third try there is only a 10% chance of the woman getting pregnant. The argument of science is a valid one, considering that the changes to the Act include 4 free embryo-fetal transmissions.

Borisov's inital promise of unlimited access to in vitro was a response to the deepening demographic crisis in Bulgaria - two major factors are mass emigration and extremely low birth-rates.
